Over thirty years ago, Abbott and Orchard Lake Middle Schools inaugurated a very successful Reading Appreciation Program (RAP). In partnership with the West Bloomfield Township Public Library, RAP is designed to encourage students in grades 6-8 to read quality literature. Our objective is to have students read or listen to books all year long.
New this year, the selected RAP books align with the thematic units being discussed in ELA classes for the quarter. Students are being asked to pick a book from a smaller group of the RAP titles each quarter. These books will be read during independent reading time and may be used by classroom teachers for book clubs where students who are reading the same book will meet and discuss the reading. The students will complete a summative assessment in class at the end of each quarter based on the book they choose to read.
All books are available for checkout from the school's iCenter and at both branches of the WPBL. Students are able to check out 1 RAP book at a time for 2 weeks. The book is then due back to the iCenter to allow another student to check it out.
