Half Day Information

  • When educators are provided with the time, support, and resources to collaborate and professionally develop, they are better equipped to meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of each individual student. One method that the West Bloomfield School District has used to support this area was to utilize late start days where students started 60 minutes later than on a normal day. Educators successfully used the time before school to collaborate with peers and grow professionally.

In order to best address the needs of all students, we determined a necessity for improved systems and structures allowing for deeper and more meaningful collaboration and professional development to occur. Since the solution to meeting this need maintains and exceeds the required 1,098 hours of instructional time with students, it will be accomplished through the scheduling of longer and more consistent blocks of collaboration and professional development time. We are replacing the late start days with twelve half days at the elementary school and middle school level, and thirteen at the high school level, beginning with the 2018-2019 school year. Most of the half days are scheduled on Fridays, which will give families going out of town for the weekend the opportunity to get a head start. The half days also provide time to schedule appointments to places such as your doctor, dentist, or orthodontist.

Our Community Education Department has arranged for Kids Klub and Tween Time after school care to be available for families who are unable to pick up their children at dismissal time. These flexible programs will be open on half days from dismissal until 6:30 p.m. Additionally the Kids Klub and Tween Time staff have assemblies an exciting package of activities for those that staff for Kids Klub and Tween Time called Half-Day Hangouts. Yoga, Bowling, Bounce House, STEAM-related fun and great special events are all on the schedule. Visit our website at www.wbsd.org/Page/4813 or call our Community Education Department at 248-865-6468 to learn more.
