ESL Program

The West Bloomfield School District seeks to provide every child, regardless of national origin or native language, quality, and meaningful educational instruction. Students who are English Learners (ELs) are provided instructional services through a Title III Alternative Language Program (ALP) which is designed to meet their unique needs.

NEWCOMER PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Newcomers Center is a program designed to make the transition easier  for  English Language Learners who have been in U.S. schools for one year or less and who have very limited to no English language skills. Students are in the Newcomer Center for half a day.  The rest of the day is spent in at their home school in a grade-level classroom with English-speaking students.   The program for  grades 1-5  is located at Sheiko Elementary.

The Newcomer Center provides a safe, secure, nurturing atmosphere— a place where students can take risks with language and have FUN!  The focus of the program is on communication skills — listening and speaking English.  Reading and writing skills are also taught through language based, hands-on activities.  Our goal is to prepare the Newcomers as quickly as possible for a successful experience in American schools.  We however, will always be there to support the Newcomer as he/she moves into a full English curriculum.
