Principal Scott Long
I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the principal of Doherty Elementary, and I look forward to working with you to create the best educational experience imaginable for your child. Ensuring that Doherty is everything that you hope for in a K-2 elementary school is one of my primary goals, and I believe that the strength of our relationships is pivotal in achieving this goal. I hope that this introduction will serve as a bridge to beginning our relationship together.
Above all else, I am a son, a brother, a father, and a husband to my family. These relationships inspire me to be better every single day. My son, Grady, is now 2 1/2 years-old, and there is a little slogan we say to each other every night that best sums up what I aspire to be for my family: "Humble, Kind, Hard-Working."
I am also the product of 14 years in the West Bloomfield School District, where I've done my best to live and breathe our mission to educate students to be their best IN and FOR the world every single day. I served 10 years as a language arts, history, and AVID teacher at Orchard Lake Middle School, where my primary passion was instilling a love for literacy within all students. I served as assistant principal at Orchard Lake Middle School from the fall of 2013 to the spring of 2017 and worked tirelessly to give all students and teachers the support they needed to be their best. Along the way, I received a Masters in Reading and Literacy (K-12) from Central Michigan University and an Education Specialist in Leadership degree from Oakland University.
I am a coach, a counselor, a friend, and a teacher to our community. Whether it is spending time in the morning to motivate a student in need, listening to a parent in order to find ways to optimize his/her child's learning experience, or working alongside a teacher to ensure that he/she has the resources need to grow as a lifelong learner, I know that every moment matters. In the end, I understand that every moment in the here and now alongside our people matters. That is how relationships are developed, and real relationships built on trust will ultimately determine our progress.
I am a servant leader that will lead with courage, optimism, enthusiasm, and resilience in order to achieve a shared vision for Doherty that is oriented around a sense of family, fun, growth, and rewarding experiences. Ultimately, I look forward to serving you this school year and beyond.
