After a rigorous search and interview process, the West Bloomfield School District is pleased to announce Sonja James has been appointed to the position of Executive Director of Educational Equity and Inclusion. Ms. James’s appointment was confirmed at the June 21 West Bloomfield Board of Education meeting. Ms. James will start her new position effective July 1, 2021.
Ms. James earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Bethune-Cookman University in 1989 and her Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Nova South Eastern University.
Ms. James previously served within the West Bloomfield School District as principal of Orchard Lake Middle School from 2005 to 2012 and principal of Sheiko Elementary from 2012-2021. Ms. James also taught fifth grade at Doherty Elementary earlier in her career.
The Executive Director of Educational Equity and Inclusion will be responsible for providing leadership to the district in its ongoing focus on diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging and works to accelerate progress with these efforts in all district programs. The Executive Director will support the Office of Learning Services in its review of curriculum, instructional resources, assessment, and professional learning and the Office of Talent Development and Management in its attempt to recruit and retain talent that reflects the diversity of the district.
