The West Bloomfield School District is proud to announce that Amy Hughes, current principal of Abbott Middle School, has been appointed to the position of principal at the new West Bloomfield Middle School which is scheduled to open in fall of 2022. Ms. Hughes was recently recommended to the position at the West Bloomfield Board of Education meeting on Sept. 23 at West Bloomfield High School.
Ms. Hughes has been a member of the West Bloomfield School District family since 1994 when she joined the staff at Abbott Middle School as at math and science teacher. She then became the building’s assistant principal in 2001 where she served in that role for four years. Ms. Hughes was then appointed to the position of principal at Abbott in 2005.
Prior to joining the West Bloomfield School District, Ms. Hughes worked in Reed City Public Schools and Plymouth-Canton Schools.
Ms. Hughes earned her bachelor's degree in education with a concentration in science in 1990 and her master’s degree in educational leadership in 1993 from Eastern Michigan University. She earned her educational specialist degree in 2012 from Oakland University.
Her vision for the new West Bloomfield Middle School includes incorporating project- based and student-designed learning, where students’ natural curiosity and creativity lend themselves to authentic and innovative thinking. Also, recognizing the important role that social-emotional education plays in helping students in the middle develop crucial life skills that go beyond academics.
“I am proud to be appointed to the position of Principal of West Bloomfield Middle School. I am excited and honored to be a part of, not only the opening of a new building, but the creation of a state of the art learning space, where we will have the unique opportunity to engage our students in authentic, real-world learning at the middle school level. I look forward to merging the students and staff from Abbott MS and Orchard Lake MS and building upon the strengths of both schools, as we evolve into this next phase of combining our two communities,” said Hughes.
Dr. Gerald Hill, WBSD superintendent, said, “We are thrilled to partner with Ms. Hughes as we work toward opening the brand new West Bloomfield Middle School for the 2022-23 school year. She has an incredible vision for the building and her leadership skills will help combine the cultures of Abbott and Orchard Lake Middle Schools into one cohesive team. This is an exciting opportunity to help design a school building, both physically and instructionally. Ms. Hughes will be a vital part of bringing this 21st century learning environment to life in the months and years to come.”
As part of the 2017 Bond proposal, students from Abbott Middle School and Orchard Lake Middle School will be combined into a brand new, state of the art facility to better meet the needs of 21st century teaching and learning practices. The new West Bloomfield Middle School will be constructed on the site of Orchard Lake Middle School with the building opening to students for the 2022-23 school year.
