STEAM

The West Bloomfield School District is pleased to announce growth of our STEAM program at the high school level.  This is a part of the district's K-12 STEAM instructional initiatives.  STEAM programs employ a Project-Based Learning approach, a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex questions, problem, or challenge.  STEAM uses critical thinking skills and incorporates the arts into this framework by recognizing that in order to be successful in technical fields, students must also be creative.  

The High School STEAM Pathway is available in grades 9-10:

Project Lead the Way Engineering Course Requirement - PLTW Engineering courses engage students in interdisciplinary activities like working with a client to design a home, programming electronic devices or robotic arms, or exploring algae as a biofuel source.  These activities not only build knowledge, and skills in engineering, but also empower students to develop essential skills such as problem-solving, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and perseverance.  

In addition to Project Lead the Way Engineering, students are encouraged to explore our other STEAM/Project-Based opportunities available for all students in 11th and 12th grade, including

• Medical Mentorship
• Medical Skills & Innovation 
• Science Capstone: Investigation and Design
• Professional Mentorship
• Business/Marketing DECA

High School STEAM openings are available for students in grades 9-10 for:

• Students currently enrolled in the West Bloomfield School District
• District Resident Students not currently attending a West Bloomfield School District School
• Schools of Choice Students

Applicants will be selected based on a review of the following criteria:

1. Semester 1 report card - Out-of-District applicants will need to submit this on or before the assessment date.
2. STEAM Assessment 
3. Discipline - Positive behavior report

Schools of Choice applicants:  If you meet criteria, you will be entered into our Schools of Choice lottery.  Applicants with siblings currently attending West Bloomfield Schools will be given preference in the lottery.

Before you can be accepted, you must submit a Discipline Report  from your current school stating that you have not been suspended or expelled in the last two years.  Without this document, we cannot admit you into the STEAM program.

The Middle School STEAM Pathway is available in grades 6-8:

Project Lead the Way STEAM Elective - PLTW Gateway (6-8) opens paths that create meaningful futures. It connects students to careers in areas they can, and can't, imagine and that are in high demand.

Through connections to careers and real-world problems, the students imagine, discover, and practice the range of paths and possibilities they can look forward to in high school and beyond. Students begin to lead their own learning and explore computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, boosting classroom engagement and excitement, supporting teamwork, and inspiring deep comprehension. And by challenging themselves to rework and refine their projects, students learn that failure and persistence are keys to learning and innovation.

Middle School STEAM openings are available for students in 6th grade:

• Students currently enrolled in the West Bloomfield School District

• District Resident Students not currently attending a West Bloomfield School District School

• Schools of Choice Students

All Applicants must meet program criteria

Applicants will be selected based on a review of the following criteria:  

• Incoming Kindergarten students will engage in an age-appropriate performance task led by an early elementary educator. 

• Incoming 1st -5th graders need to submit 1st semester report cards, have a positive behavior report, and complete the assessment requirement.

Schools of Choice Applicants:  If you meet criteria, you will be entered into our Schools of Choice lottery.  Applicants with siblings currently attending West Bloomfield Schools will be given preference in the lottery.
